2012 Energy & Resources Predictions @Deloitte publication #in

Deloitte recently launched the Energy & Resources Predictions 2012 report.

Some of my key take-aways after the break.

  1. High prices and high volatility for rare metals for the next few years. Demand is expected to exceed demand.
  2. Corporate portfolio management will be a key differentiator between oil & gas groups. Balance must be found between being large and vertically integrated with commensurate high operational leverage and being focused on core competencies. The challenge here is allocating capital between supply assets in mature segments (consider: overcapacity in the shipping industry) versus new growth areas (consider: green and renewable tech).
  3. Nanotechnology will bring the same transformational benefits to the oil & gas industry that miniaturisation brought to the semiconductor industry.
  4. Natural gas will be the new darling of the energy industry for two key reasons: competitive supply bringing down prices and a trend of using gas to supplement renewable sources (wind and solar).
