Crafting a personal mission statement
// February 15th, 2009 // Musings
Reading through Guy Kawasaki’s twitter stream, I came across a productivity blog post advocating people write personal mission statements. The gist of the article is that one very powerful way to attain success is to begin with clarity. I am definately an advocate of having a clear statement of purpose!
So here are some thoughts after reading Michael’s blog post linked above:
An elaboration on the definition of SMART. not the “Specific, Measurable Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound” you learned at school, but :
- SHARP –> Ip Man once said, “The blade need not be long, it need only be sharp”. Approach life with a razor-like focus, trim the unnecessary and run a tight, fast ship. Being specific isn’t good enough … “To be a well known IT professional in Brunei with a variety of clients and engagements “. We have to be sharp, and we do that is by focusing on the goals … so –> “Become a market leading IT consultant by bringing global best practices to my client engagements. “
- MUSTARD –> The statement should “pass muster”!
- AGILE –> Just because you slaved over your mission statement for months and months, doesn’t mean that you have to stick to it for the rest of your life. Circumstances change, so should strategy.
- REVERB –> The statement should echo and make you feel that you are doing good. “Save the penguins” won’t cut mustard if you just aren’t into wildlife.
- Take time –> to write it down. Or blog it, if you can!
